My car has an automatic transmission.

Hi there. It sounds like you need an oil change and a check engine light inspection. There are many things that can trigger the check engine light. I suggest having a qualified technician perform an inspection to avoid replacing unnecessary parts. Your Mechanic has several available technicians that can assist you with an oil change service and a check engine light inspection.
