Q: Key does not turn in the ignition

asked by on November 30, 2016

Good Morning!

I have been dealing with this problem over the last couple of days and can't seem to figure out what the issue is.

I recently replaced the heater core and ignition cylinder. Upon completion of both of these tasks, I went to put the vehicle back together. While attempting to shift the vehicle into gear to attach the dash panel again, the key will not turn. It will turn to the ACC position, but will not move any further.

A couple of other - The steering wheel is not locked

  • The vehicle is not parked in a way that the steering column should be locked.

  • Recently replaced the battery, so there is no issue with power available to start vehicle.

Please let me know if you have any other questions. I'm not sure where to go from here.

My car has 120000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

How do I know if the brakes need to be replaced?
Your car has self-adjusting, four-wheel disc brakes. That offers better stopping power, but you need to know the signs that the pads are beginning to wear out. While some squeaking is normal with all disc brakes, yours are equipped with...
Car stalls after reaching operating temp
Depends on if the engine is overheating or not. It would not stall on turns only, if it was overheating (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/what-causes-a-car-to-overheat). It would stall a lot more often than that. You may have a problem with the EGR valve sticking...
My car feels as if I am driving it in neutral but I'm not.. my RPM will go up but I cant accel over 20mph. Only happens sometimes
Hi there. This may be a sign of a faulty transmission control solenoid or simply low transmission fluid (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/transmission-fluid-service). Modern automatic transmissions use pressurized hydraulic fluid to change gears. Every time a gear change is required, the car's computer activates...
Voltage drop noticed during night driving. The headlights dim and then return to normal.
This may be a sign of a failing voltage regulator or potentially a bad ground connection. As you may know, the voltage regulator regulates the charging of the battery by the alternator. When the voltage regulator is not working properly,...
I have pebble damage on the bonnet and am wondering where to get the correct paint to fill in the grey spots
Hi there: Usually you can visit a professional automotive paint supplier to have them match the color on your vehicle or supply you with a paint code. This is the best way to ensure the paint you get is matched...
Throttle control warning light is on and I have no power.
Hi there. The code P2127 (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/p2127-obd-ii-trouble-code-throttle-pedal-position-sensor-switch-e-circuit-low-by-spencer-clayton) is coming on for the throttle position sensor being disconnected or not communicating with the ECM (computer). Check the throttle position sensor to see if the resistance changes when the throttle is opened and...
My car doors keep unlocking and locking after I turn off the car and it drains my battery. What do I do?
Hi there. Check all of the door switches on the door jams. The driver door or passenger front door will cause the doors to unlock after locked if the switch is not working. This is like the driver door open...
Oil cap is under a vacuum.
The vacuum is due to the (PCV) Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/positive-crankcase-ventilation-pcv-valve-replacement) being plugged up. I recommend replacing the PCV valve and the issue will go away. When the PCV valve is plugged up, the engine crankcase cannot breathe and...
Shifting into 2nd at high RPM
Hi there. It is very possible that the speed sensor or shift solenoid is the primary source of this type of issue with the first to second shift. However, a worn out torque converter or an obstruction inside the transmission...
