Q: I own a 2004 Saturn ion with roughly 240000 miles. won't shift into reverse and I added 5 qts of atf. Can I do without buying new?

asked by on October 30, 2017

My car won't shift into reverse. The back up lights come on and it drives fine. Neutral and all but it just won't reverse. I added 5 quarts of transmission fluid and rode it around my neighborhood a few times. The car began to drive smoother than before but it still won't go into reverse. Is there anything I can do that won't involve me having to replace it? Money is tight right now. Is it possible that it might just need more fluid? Or maybe a flush? I've had the car for 3 years now and unfortunately I haven't a flush in that time. I'm new to cars being only 23 but I try to keep up the maintenance as best as I can.

My car has 240000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.
