I have a '96 Ford Probe GT that I will have owned for 20 years come July. It had under 6,000 miles when I purchased it and is now close to 267,000. It is now my second car and I'm debating whether to donate it to charity or refurbish it and keep it around for another 10 years. I know most think it's crazy to put thousands into a car with a blue book value of around $250, but it still runs well, I love driving it and don't really want to get rid of it. For now, the car will need some body work (a little rusty with few small dents) and a paint job. I'm sure the original suspension (and probably steering) parts need work as well. If I take my car to a mechanic, how much would they charge to inspect the underneath parts I mentioned? Do you inspect the frame for rust or would I need a body shop for that? Can I get an estimate for what needs fixing? Any helpful information you can give me in making my decision will be greatly appreciated.
