I had a tapping I thought was transmission, no slipping.. when I went to take off it then stopped allowing me to go while engine ran with no more tap. So, I shut it off and try to turn it back on, but no crank. I think the starter turned over but maybe the gear was not able to catch? Could that be the problem?

My car has 170000 miles.
