Q: I drive a 1979 chrysler cordoba. When i first fire it up it requires me to warm up the engine and idles really rough. Why?

asked by on December 23, 2017

After the cordoba has been sitting for over a day it idles really rough on first startup. If i give the engine a little gas consistently for a few minutes it starts to idle normally and i can then begin driving it. If not it idles really slow and rough and sounds like it is gonna quit. After i have begun driving (after doing what i described before) it runs rough for the first 2 minutes or so. During this time the transmission stutters while shifting and the lurches a small bit when slowing to a stop. After about two minutes of this the car runs smooth and good. It continues to start and run well afor the rest of the day until its been sitting to long again. Rinse and repeat. In addittion the more days it is left parked the worse it runs at first.

My car has 69000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Transmission stuck in park
Hello there, a few different faults can cause the transmission to become stuck in park like this. The most common are the transmission range switch, neutral safety switch (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-neutral-safety-switch), or a brake switch issue. Faults that occur intermittently like this...

Car keeps overheating and losing antifreeze. Thermostat and hoses are all fine. What else could it be?
Hi. I believe your Hyundai has a blown head gasket. This failure mode may not contaminate engine oil with coolant as sometimes occurs. The lost coolant (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/the-best-tool-to-find-coolant-leaks-by-timothy-charlet) may go into the cylinder or the exhaust instead. A slightly sweet smell...

When I put it into Drive, it won't barely move, but it will reverse.
