Can we clean a catalytic converter? How does it get blocked?
The catalytic converter has one job: to reduce harmful emissions in your car’s exhaust to help mitigate pollution. It uses a catalyst (actually more than one) to convert harmful chemicals like carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides into harmless substances. Overtime, the metal catalyst will become clogged with carbon deposits or "emissions". Although there are a few additives that some mechanics recommend for removing carbon from the exhaust system and the catalytic converter, there are multiple negative side-effects such as reduced engine performance, lower fuel economy or overheating. It’s always best to replace the catalytic converter once it’s been determined that it’s clogged.
