Q: Five beeps, no warning lights, 1989 Chevy S10

asked by on March 27, 2018

I drive the truck to work about 15 miles each direction. There are big hills each direction (long, steep, and kind of winding). The truck is in need of a valve adjustment (which will be done on the 7th by a YourMechanic.com mechanic). Other than that I didn't believe it was in need of anything else. About 13 miles into my trip home yesterday, the truck wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary. But I heard it beep 5 times in succession. No special pattern, no loop. Just 5 higher-pitched beeps at about 90bpm. It did it twice, about 5-8 minutes apart. I can't tell where it's coming from, my stereo has a receiver that hasn't worked in a while. The speakers work but doesn't sound like it's coming from them. It's weird, I can't tell where the beeping is coming from, I don't know what it means, and no warning lights pop up. There are no odd smells or sounds. It did it again this morning as I was pulling in to work, twice. About 30 seconds between sets. Google search was futile. Any ideas?

ran out of oil and wont start
Hello. If the oil was completely empty, then you may have a serious engine failure. I would first add oil (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/car-is-hard-to-start-inspection) to it and then try starting it. If it still does not start and makes a lot of noise...
Engine sluggish, hesitates during accleration
Hello. A flashing Check Engine Light on your vehicle typically indicates that there is an engine misfire. This can occur from a failing spark plug (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-bad-or-failing-spark-plugs) or more commonly a clogged or failing fuel injection unit (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-fuel-injector). I typically check...

my transmission is "slipping" 3% of the time
Hello. From what you describe, it would appear that your transmission is beginning to slip (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/gears-slipping-when-accelerating-inspection). This can be caused by many things. The first thing I would do is check the vehicle's transmission. Automatic transmission use fluid pressure to...
Car won't start and key fob won't open or lock doors even after changing its batteries
Hello. If there was a delay in the engagement of the starter, but it was fine once it did engage, then most of the time this is caused by an issue with the starter relay or the ignition switch. Both...

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON
Hi there: If you replaced the cam sensors and the check engine light is still illuminated, it's highly possible that the trouble code is caused by the electrical harness attached to the sensors as opposed to the sensors themselves. The...
