Q: engine cranks in any gear

engine cranks in any gear including in neutral and parking

The function of the neutral-safety switch is to make sure the vehicle can only be started in Park or Neutral. This is similar in function to having to depress the clutch pedal to start a manual transmission-equiped vehicle. It prevents the engine and transmission from being "connected" while starting which can cause the vehicle to lurch in any gear. Have a certified technician inspect the neutral safety switch to correct any faults.
