Q: Dies a few seconds after start

asked by on January 22, 2017

Sometimes when it starts it will die after 3-5 seconds. In this time I can fully rev the engine, but the rpms will drop after a couple of seconds until the vehicle dies (meaning it doesn't die at 5000 rpms, but will slow until it stops, not responding to my foot still being on the gas). If it's doing this, it'll do it again and again. If I leave the key in but turn it off and wait several minutes, it will continue to misbehave. But if I turn it off and pull the keys and wait, it'll often start right up--without any need of revving the engine. If it makes it past the starting phase, it will idle and drive normally.

Hello - a knocking noise while rolling in neutral is likely a damaged Constant Velocity joint (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/is-it-safe-to-drive-with-a-damaged-cv-joint) or a wheel bearing with a "hard spot" or damaged position in the bearing. Acceleration puts additional load on the CV joints, so...
