Q: Carl lurches when I’m about to come to a full stop

asked by on October 08, 2017

I recently purchased this Passat and I’ve noticed that when I’m slowing down and about to come to a complete stop the car kind of lurches. This does not happen if I’m using tiptronic mode or if I put it in neutral. The car always up shifts smoothly and downshifts smoothly in all other gears until I’m about to stop which I suspect is it shifting into first poorly. I have had it tested and it’s not throwing any codes.

My car has 105627 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Hello. The most common cause of this is either a bad body control module or a bad ground. Most of the time this is from a short in the body control module. I would typically start by checking the connections...

Hi there. Have you checked for any problem codes, whether the Check Engine light is on or not? Those codes, if any, will expedite accurate diagnosis and lower cost to repair. I would check the fuel pump relay (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/fuel-pump-relay-replacement). The...

Hello, thanks for writing in. the torque converter is the likely failure here. The torque converter drives the pressure pump for the transmission (which provides the hydraulic pressure for gear engagement, shifting, etc.). The torque converter splines are notoriously weak...

Hello, thank you for writing in. When it comes to no start (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/car-is-not-starting-inspection) and stalling issues, you want to start with the simple stuff. Make sure your batter cables are perfect, the new battery is fully charged, and make sure...

Hello - you don't mention the specific problem codes you are getting, but the problem you are having may not be the cam sensor itself (https://www.yourmechanic.com/question/car-is-running-fine-somewhat-but-have-p0345-code-cam-shaft-position-sensor-by-kerry-a). Rather, the problem could be the "v-shaped" timing chain guide between the cylinder banks....
Mid-tire change, my car broke down on the jack and is currently sitting outside my apartment with the rim/etc on the ground
Your fastest option will be to request spare tire installation or flat fix (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/spare-tire-installation). In the course of that, the brake rotor and any other parts that might have contacted the ground will be inspected for damage. If you attempt...
