Q: Car won't turn back on.

asked by on February 27, 2017

I was driving up a small hill, pressed on my breaks when the person in front of me slammed on their breaks. When I went to press the gas, my car started jerking and all the dashboard lights came on. A few seconds later, my car shut off while I was still driving, I went to pull over and my steering wheel locked up completely. I went earlier today to try to start it, the radio comes on but it makes a clicking noise when I try to crank it. I've read it may be my battery, alternator, starter, a spark plug. I'm just not sure which direction to go towards.

My car has 209000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Loud metal to metal thud sound when turning and changing gears
Hi there, thanks for writing in. If you're getting a loud banging on acceleration, I would say it sounds like you have worn engine or transmission mounts, or perhaps a worn torque arm bushing that mounts the solid rear axle...
Every three months, catalytic converter and muffler must be replaced
I would start with checking the O2 sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/oxygen-sensor-replacement). This is what relays exhaust gas changes to the vehicle's computer. When this sensor is not working correctly, incorrect or misdiagnosed air/fuel mixtures are relayed to the vehicle's computer causing incorrect...
Engine coughs and stumbles at start up

My car will not start when I turn the key, it just makes a clicking sound. What is wrong?
A starter like any other mechanical and electrical part is subject to failing sometimes for no apparent reason. However, sometimes this is misdiagnosed as well and often times mistaken for something much more simple like a fuse, relay, or starter...
Code P0340
The P0340 problem code references a camshaft position sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/camshaft-position-sensor-replacement) malfunction. The ability to restart the engine suggests it is failing versus has failed. There was an issue with this engine with the cam chain tensioner - which also affects...
Car will blow cold air but will not blow heat
The heater not working in some cases may be related to the overheating problem you are also having. This may be due to a faulty heater blower motor or potentially a bad heater core (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/heater-is-not-working-inspection). As you may know, the...
What parts are needed to replace all of the engine mounts?
Hi there. There are 4 engine and transmission mounts that your vehicle uses. The engine needs 2 dog bone design mounts and 2 hydraulic compression mounts. Some 3.3L engines may only have 1 dog bone mount. I recommend taking pictures...
What if I dont have power to the acc relay how do I fix it do
Hi there. It really depends as to what is causing the accessory relay to not receive power as to what is the best solution. If the relay is not properly grounded, the repair is to resolve the ground issue. If...
I have a Dodge Dakota 4 x 4 2001 truck yet dies instantly after it's Crank. The check engine light was on for a month prior. Help
Since the check engine light is on already you would not know if the computer stored additional codes that will point to the problem you are having unless you have the system tested again. You need to have this done...

How Long Does a Throttle/Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor Last?
The The throttle/accelerator pedal position sensor detects the position of the accelerator pedal. This information is then transmitted to the vehicle’s computer - the engine control module (ECM). From there, the data is then sent from the computer to the...
