Q: Car won't shift when driving

asked by on

My car starts but doesn't want to shift when in drive.

Hello. If you cannot move the shifter from park, then you may have a shift interlock problem. This can be caused by a failing brake switch, but most of the time it is caused by a failure in the wiring to the shift lock solenoid in the shifter assembly. The wiring tends to break where it enters the console. This would need to be taken apart to be able to inspect the wiring. I recommend you have a technician, like one from YourMechanic, inspect for any failing electrical components and diagnose the shifting problem.
