Q: Car won’t go into neautral, battery is fine, and makes a squeal and grind.

asked by on November 02, 2017

I was driving home and the car started squealing and having trouble driving. Car starts up just fine, but when I threw it into neutral it wouldn’t move. Smelled something and there was smoke on the right side of the engine(if looking at it from under hood).
My car has an automatic transmission.

Hello. If you are losing power steering on turns, then you may have a belt tensioner issue (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/drive-belt-tensioner-replacement) causing the power steering pump to have low pressure when turning. Have the belt and tensioner checked (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/steering-wheel-does-not-respond-properly-inspection).
