Q: Car will not shift out of first gear unless I put it into sports mode

asked by on February 09, 2018

I had replaced all 6 spark plus very carefully. Removing the cover and the intake cover as well. Took out all the old spark plugs and put in new NGK platinum spark plugs. Took it for a test drive after and it will not shift out of first gear. The engine revs in first gear and will not shift to second gear unless I put the car into sports mode and do it manually that way. Any idea of what it could be? It did not do this prior to the spark plugs being changed.

My car has 150000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Car dying when put into gear
Your concern can be as simple as a broken/dry rotten hose that may be allowing too much air into the engine. The ignition system must be well-tuned and the alternator must be capable of charging the battery during vehicle operation....
My car shakes while it idles but says there is an evap system leak?

How did I kill 3 alternators and 4 batteries in 6 months?

VVT vs VCT
Mike, we are happy to clarify. VVT (variable valve timing) is a general term for the system that keeps timing of the valves, and is typically designed to work with the camshaft. A VCT (variable cam timing) can be considered...
When I start my car it sounds like a muffler news up front right below the engine what is that or can you help
It's possible that an exhaust component is leaking and/or is loose. This can be determined by a visual inspection and if you desire such an inspection please request an engine noise diagnostic - suspected exhaust leak/loose mount (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/engine-is-running-louder-than-normal-inspection). If you...
02 Grand Vitara 2.5L idles fine, but won't accelerate. Timing chain, MAF, fuel pump, compression, spark, injector pulse OK
It is possible that the fuel filter was never replaced with the fuel pump replacement. This could mean that the fuel filter is clogged and only allowing enough fuel to pass through for idle. Once more fuel is required when...
