Q: Car turned off on drive and won't turn back on

My rack and pinion fell from transmission while driving..my car turned off while still in drive and does not want to turn back on..got the rack and pinion replace but car still on turn on because it is still in gear..how would I get it out of gear?

My car has 87000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.
