Q: Car's transmission not shifting properly.

asked by on June 08, 2017

In bumper to bumper, stop and go rush hour traffic, my 2005 Buick Park Avenue's 4 or 5 speed? transmission seems to "jump" into gear instead of smoothly "shifting" into gear. The same problem occurred to my 1989 Buick Regal. Someone once suggested that it COULD BE a bad solenoid. What do you think?

My car has 140000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

My car takes a long time to start
Hi there. From the description you have provided, I don't believe a bad fuel rail sensor could cause the ECM (electronic control module)/PCM (powertrain control module) to set a P0335. My car wont start the indicator show its on reverse but its on parking 2008 Nissan Xterra
Hi there - your symptoms suggest that the shifter cable (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/3-essential-things-to-know-about-your-car-s-gear-shifter) has worn sufficiently to prevent proper gear selection, or has come loose from either the shifter or the transmission proper. I recommend a shifter inspection (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/car-is-hard-to-shift-inspection) performed by a...

Hi Joseph. Thanks for writing in tonight. If you turn the key forward and you don't hear the starter engage or anything, then it's likely that you have a damaged electrical relay, which supplies power to the starter from the...
