Q: Car running rough and engine races

asked by on

My car starts rough. The engine races and then white smoke comes out of the exhaust. I am not currently getting a Check Engine light or error codes, other than the code P1399.

Hi. White smoke indicates that you have a blown head gasket. The motor may have overheated, warping the head and causing coolant to leak into the cylinder. I would recommend a complete engine rebuild for this problem. I would look in the oil fill cap and look for a milky looking sludge built up in the valve cover. That will indicate coolant in oil and a blown head gasket. If you need further assistance, I recommend you have a mechanic, like one from YourMechanic, diagnose your vehicle’s smoke issue and for head gasket damage.

All these codes point to engine misfires. You should pull the spark plug wires to see if oil is on the spark plug wires causing the misfire. You would need to replace the valve cover gaskets and spark plug tube...

Q: Steering wheel off centre after car repair

It is very possible that the steering angle sensor is the cause of this issue. I would recommend having it recalibrated as this should resolve the issue.

Q: my cadillac over heats I bought this car this way it only over heats after u drive it a while the thermostat has been changed what

If a coolant flush was not done with the thermostat replacement, try doing that. A blocked cooling system can cause overheating as well. Also, pull the spark plugs and inspect them. Under normal operation, they should be a light brown...
