Q: Car or stereo won't shut off once car is off and key out and battery keeps dying

asked by on October 13, 2017

When i turn the car off and take the key out it still runs then after about 10 to 15 secs it shuts off. My stereo won't shut off when i turn the car off and open the door and now my battery is dead. Anyone know what the issue could be? I was told to replace the ignition switch but will that keep the stereo off and battery from draining?

My car has 145000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Why does the a/c blower slower down when the rpms go up
The blower motor is not slowing down. What is actually happening is the mode control for your AC and heat is losing its vacuum source. When you switch the knob for defrost/vent/floor etc, engine vacuum is what moves the mode...

It will not turn over and start
Because you left the car running but it died anyways, this tells me that this is not the battery at fault. The most likely culprit is the alternator (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/alternator-replacement). Many people are not aware, but testing an alternator is really...
Car accelarates to 3000 rpm in park or neutral.
The throttle position sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/throttle-position-sensor-replacement) (TPS) is most likely failing. Air leaks in the intake can also generate a high idle, but not usually this high. If you need to have this checked, have a local mechanic, like one from...
Check Engine Light is on - 2008 Chrysler Sebring

Most auto parts supply stores will read the codes for you without charge. Once you have the...

Best place to put sound damping/insulation in car
Hi Bazil. Thanks for sending your question today. I think you'll find the best results in reducing road noise by adding sound dampening insulation on floorboards. However, this also raises potential safety concerns, as adding additional material to these areas...
