Q: Ball joint replacement

The back, passenger side ball joint broke (causing the tire to come almost completely off) and I am being told the whole "housing" has to be replaced because it is a factory part and just the ball joint itself can not be replaced. Is this accurate? There appears to be no other damage to the tire ect...
