The most common cause is low or no refrigerant. The system would need to be checked for leaks before recharging. Leaks can occur anywhere. If this is not the case, there are many other problems that can cause the AC not to work. Defective switches, pressure sensors, fuses, relays, compressor internals, compressor clutch, and so on.
