Q: A/C quit working belt seems to have melted.

asked by on August 29, 2017

I was driving home today with my truck loaded down. As I was going up the final hill on my way home I began to lose speed. So I hit the gas like I do everyday and put the RPM's around 3500 maybe up to 4000. At that exact moment my A/C quit working. It didn't seem like I big deal until the truck started to make a very loud rubbing type sound and began to let out white smoke from the passenger side wheel well. There is what looks to be melted rubber all over the tensioner pulley but the belt looks okay. I went ahead and cut the belt off so I can still drive the truck. The pulley can be spun by hand but it definitely isn't a very smooth turn. Should I just have the compressor replaced?

My car has 127500 miles.

Can I drive a car that is misfiring to the mechanic to get it fixed or do I need to have it towed in?
Unfortunately, if the engine is actively misfiring (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/engine-is-misfiring-inspection), unburned gas from the misfiring cylinder(s) ends up in the catalytic converter. Basically, once that gas is dumped there, as a vapor of course, it eventually "lights off" in the converter (gas,...
