Q: 2011 Hyundai Sonata, both break light sockets are burnt

asked by on March 26, 2018

Both break lights need to be replaced about once a month. usually they go out at the same time. but not always. this has persisted for the last 6-8 months and has gotten more and more frequent. both passenger and driver side break lights go out, but rear window break light remains functional and has never gone out. They both went out today and upon trying to replace the bulbs I noticed both bulbs were difficult to remove and much blacker than I've seen them before. new bulbs wouldn't work in either socket. Then I noticed the sockets looked black as well and non-vital plastic pieces around the socket cracked off while trying to get the new bulbs in.

so the sockets are burnt out. and seem to have progressed to that point.

(I drove my car 27,000 miles over the last year for uber around the city of philly and surrounding areas so the bulbs get quite a lot of action)

What needs fixed?

Can I fix this myself with typical consumer available tools?

My car has 129000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.
