Q: Clutch

asked by on November 23, 2017

Proud owner of a 2007 Subaru WRX, with 216,000 km or roughly 134216 Miles. I have recently started to smell a heavy oil/rubber smell both in and outside of the car. With this, it is to be noted a large amount of smoke coming out of the exhaust lately. A young manual driver who is still learning clutch to gas ratio while in switching gears (My RMP is too high). I also sometimes ride the clutch coming up to stop signs. Worried that this may cost a lot of money to fix. Any info about the cause of these problems and or tips are useful thank you very much.

My car has 134216 miles.
My car has a manual transmission.

The first thing I would have checked by a certified mechanic would be the battery (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/battery-is-dead-inspection), a typical battery for your car only has a useful life of about 3-5 years. The amount of power left in the battery might...

What kind of modification/performance can I do to my car?
Hello - the best way to keep your Altima running like new is "attentive maintenance (https://www.yourmechanic.com/scheduled-maintenance/nissan-altima/?year=2009&mileage=150000)". Keep fluids (oil, transmission fluid, coolant) topped off and changed at recommended intervals. If your timing chain and associated components (tensioner, idler, chain guides,...
Is it a fuel pump issue?
It's possible that a failing fuel pump (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/fuel-pump-replacement), or a clogged fuel filter or fuel injectors for that matter, can cause stalling at idle but there are other common causes such as vacuum leaks, EGR system faults, sensor faults such...
Car is hesitating upon acceleration
Hesitation is not generally caused by transmission faults. With regard to the transmission, if the fluid is "old", it's a good idea to change the fluid and the filter. Simply request transmission fluid service (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/transmission-fluid-service) and the responding certified mechanic...
I was told I needed a new transmission. I am not sure if that is the problem.
If the transmission was always shifting smoothly, but only after purchasing fuel that day you immediately experienced reduced performance, I would first suspect (and try to rule out) bad gas. Excepting frankly easy to detect significant, and non intermittent, electrical...
