Q: "Undiagnosed" rough driving, seemingly without cause, most noticeable around 70mph, inconsistent brake pedal resistance

asked by on December 20, 2017

Rough driving started starting approximately 4 months ago has not changed in intensity. Is most noticeable around 30mph. Steering is loose or spongy especially when above 60 miles an hour or after extended driving often accompanied by inconsistent brakeing. Meaning the brake pedal is low sometimes and can feel higher other times as well as seems to slip or not work properly. No complete failure. Nose diving started approximately 2 weeks ago, consistently feels as though air needs to be added to the tires. Sluggish at acceleration especially but not specifically uphill. Have taken to dealership 2 times, visual brake inspection and ride along showed no results, left tire wear worse (minimaly) than others. Does not pull to a side. Was aligned 3 months ago with no difference

My car has 44682 miles.

When the ignition switch is left on ACC for a while, the car won't start
This is not an uncommon issue. Listening to the radio for 25 minutes with the car off is not a problem normally. But in this case, the most likely cause of this is either the ignition switch or the battery...
Ignition starts car, but engine won't catch
Hello! I believe the problem will be within your ignition key lock cylinder (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-ignition-lock-cylinder). There is a passlock sensor in the ignition key lock cylinder. This sensor is known to become bad overtime. Replacing the ignition key lock cylinder will...
Both battery terminals get hot while engine is running on a zx3 dohc zetec 16 valve
Hi, thanks for writing in. I'd be happy to help. Based on your details, I feel that this could be from a bad cable end or connection to the battery or a shorted battery (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-battery). I would recommend having an...
I was told to change my valve gasket and valve cover. Should I?

Car is running fine (somewhat) but have P0345 code (cam shaft position sensor).
The most common cause of this code is going to be the timing chain and timing gear phasers along with cam solenoids can all cause the problem of cam misalignment. The problem can cause low power, rattles and check engine...
My RPM's on my car keep revving up, but won't go past 2,000
Hi there. A rough idling engine can be caused by a number of issues, some of them are serious while others tend to be minor, but the symptoms remain pretty much the same. The car will feel rough and bouncy...
Engine is making loud knocking sound. Is it the rod bearings?
Before you condemn the motor for having rod or crankshaft knock you should have the crankshaft harmonic balancer checked for a broken one. If it is bad then it can cause a loud knocking noise. Replace it if it is...
P0446
Hi There, These codes all relate to a leak in the Evaporative Emissions system (EVAP system). Your car has a small purge valve with a purge solenoid (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/evaporation-vent-solenoid-replacement) in the Evaporative Emissions system that controls the venting of fumes from...
After putting gas my engine is having a weird tapping / knock like sound ?
There is a possibility that the gas is contaminated although of course the issue (the noise and the underlying mechanical cause) could have just coincidentally arose right at the time you bought gas. You might check with the station and...
