What is YourMechanic?

YourMechanic is an online marketplace where car owners can hire mobile car mechanics (mechanics who make house calls). Mobile mechanics offer car repair and maintenance services at the convenience of your home or office, 7 days a week. YourMechanic helps you find the right mechanic for your car, get a quote, book appointments, and access service history. YourMechanic also provides warranty on every service.

How does it work?

  2. In most cases, we will give you a price instantly. You will see the breakdown of labor fees and parts cost. No surprises or hidden costs. If an instant price is not available, we will send you a quote within a day.
  3. When you are ready, you can book an appointment with a mechanic of your choice. You can see their ratings and reviews from other customers. Only customers who have booked and completed an appointment through our site can write a review - this guarantees that all the reviews are from real customers.
  4. Your mechanic will perform the service at the convenience of your home or office.
  5. We bill your credit card only after the work is done. You can access your service report and receipt in your account.
  6. YourMechanic provides the warranty on every service. If you ever have any questions or issues, simply contact us by email or phone.

Can a mechanic really fix my car at my location?

Yes! All maintenance and basic repairs can be done right in your driveway. Our certified mobile mechanics carry all the tools, scanners and lifts to do most repairs at your home or office. We’ve serviced thousands of cars, from simple jobs such as oil changes and replacing brakes to more complex repairs like replacing timing belts. As long as you have a driveway, parking lot or garage, you can use this extremely convenient service (Unfortunately, our mechanics prefer not to work on public streets as it is not safe).

What type of services can mobile mechanics provide?

Our mobile mechanics currently offer more than 100 services: brakes, belts, hoses, fluids, lights, check engine lights, car not starting, fluid leaks, etc. You can see the full list of services here: www.yourmechanic.com/services.

Do you have a shop where I can bring my car?

Our mechanics come to you and provide services at the convenience of your home or office. We do not have a shop location where you can bring your car.

Which cities do you serve?

Currently we have mechanics offering services in the Bay Area (Northern California). We will start opening new markets in early 2014. If you would like to be notified when we launch in your area, simply create a free account.

Do you do warranty work or collision damage repair?

If you have extended warranty, we can work with your warranty provider. We currently do not work with OEM and do not offer any OE warranty services. We also do not provide any collision related repairs.

What are your hours?

Our office is open 7 days a week from 9am-5pm. Our mechanics set their own hours, but in most of our service areas, mechanics are available 7 days a week.

How can I get an estimate?

You can request an estimate online by selecting your location, car and services. In most cases, we will give you a price instantly. You will see the breakdown of labor fees and parts cost. No surprises or hidden costs. If an instant price is not available, we will send you a quote within 24 hours.

How is the price calculated?

The price of every job is set by YourMechanic, not the mechanics. This is intended to ensure that our customers are paying a fair price and the mechanics are getting a fair compensation.

All our pricing is calculated by YourMechanic’s online Fair Price Calculator built with 20 years of industry standard labor guide data intended to dispense with the need for any negotiation. Our online pricing system is intended to be fair and impartial. Customers in the same region will pay comparable prices to other customers in the same region. And note that our pricing is not based on the mechanic’s time. We give you a fixed price per job. Whether the job takes less or more time than expected, you pay a fixed price.

Average time to do the job: 4.2 hours

Mechanic's hourly rate: $85

Fixed labor fees: $85 x 4.2 = $357 (please note: we don’t charge for time. we charge a fixed fee whether the job takes less or more time).

Parts from wholesaler: $198.30

Your fair price: $85 x 4.2 (labor fee) + $198.30 (parts) = $555.30

What is your hourly rate?

Our average hourly rate in the northern california is $85 an hour. The average rate at local repair shops is $105 an hour and $135+ at local dealer service centers.

Is it more expensive than going to shops and dealers?

Mobile mechanics don’t have the overhead costs of repair shops and dealers. For most services, mobile mechanics can save you 20-30% compared to shops and dealers. However, a few small services (like an Oil change, air filter replacement) may cost you more than local shops since mechanics have to make certain minimum amount of fees to justify the cost of traveling (fuel cost, time etc) to you. If you value your time, the convenience and ease of online booking and mechanic coming to you etc may justify spending a little more than local shops on those smaller services.

Is there an additional fee for the mechanic to come to my location?

Nope. We connect you with mechanics who live close to your location. They do not charge a drive fee or convenience fee.

Is there a cancellation fee?

You may cancel your appointment for no charge at any time more than 24 hours prior to the scheduled start time of the appointment. If you cancel within 24 hours of the scheduled start time, YourMechanic will charge your credit card a $25 cancellation fee.

Am I supposed to tip the mechanic?

Our mechanics do not expect a tip of any kind. Instead of leaving a tip, give them feedback and write a review on their profile. Please also refer them to your friends and family members.

What if mechanic finds that my car needs more or less services than I had requested?

If the mechanic working on your car finds that your car needs more or less services than originally requested, he or she will notify you and get a verbal approval for any changes to the original estimate.

Decrease in quoted price: If your car does not need a part installed (e.g., if you requested brake pads, but the mechanic finds that the brake pads are fine), the mechanic will notify you. If you choose to take the mechanic’s recommendation and not replace the part(s) that are not needed, the mechanic will simply charge you the minimum service visit charge. (This varies depending on the region, but it is usually 1 hour of labor fee.)

Increase in quoted price: If your car needs more services than needed (e.g., if you requested brake pads, but the mechanic finds that the brake rotors are worn below serviceable limits), the mechanic will notify you. You can choose to continue with the job or have the mechanic add the needed parts. The mechanic will provide you an updated estimate by email, and will wait to get a verbal approval before performing such additional services.

Is there a fee for mechanic to diagnose my car?

Yes. Our mechanics charge a diagnostic fee to come to you and diagnose your car. This fee covers their time and cost of driving to you. The fee can vary, but on average it is about 1 hour of labor time.

What does the diagnostic service include?

If your car has a problem, you can book a mechanic to perform a diagnostic. A mechanic will come to your location and inspect your car. Our mechanics go through a step by step process to rule out or confirm any part(s) failures. Diagnosing a problem is a process. Sometimes the only way to prove that a part is defective is to “replace with known good replacement parts” and recheck the car. Your mechanic will diagnose the car, provide their preliminary recommendations and repair estimates, based on their visual inspection and/or tests performed. The inspection report may include photos, test results, audio notes, recommended services and a service estimate (if applicable).

Does the inspection fee go towards the repair?

We currently do not apply the inspection fee towards your repairs. We strive to always be fair to both our mechanics and our customers, which is why we choose to compensate our mechanics fairly for the time it takes them to come out and diagnose your issue.
Some repair shops will not charge you an upfront diagnostic fees but they will add the fees to your repair bill. We believe in upfront and transparent pricing. We charge an upfront inspection fee and our repair fees don’t have any hidden inspection fees or shady markups.

I don’t know what’s wrong with my car. What can I do?

You can book an appointment for a mechanic to come out to you and inspect your car. They will provide their inspection report and recommend services that your car needs.

How can I book an appointment?

You can book an appointment online by selecting your location, car and services. In most cases, we will give you a price instantly. You will see the breakdown of labor fees and parts cost. You will also see a list of mechanics with their availability. To book an appointment, simply select a time that works for you and provide your location and payment information.

Why is a credit card required to book an appointment?

Your credit card is not billed until the mechanic has performed all the services. However, a valid credit card is required to hold your appointment and to verify that the appointment request is legitimate. This prevents people from making fictitious appointments and ensures that mechanics are not wasting their time driving around. We use bank level security and all your data is passed over a secured 256-bit encrypted connection.

Can I choose a mechanic?

Yes. After you request a quote, you will see a list of mechanics with their qualifications, reviews and availabilities. We only show you mechanics who are qualified to work on your car. You can choose a mechanic from the list of qualified mechanics.

How soon can I get a mechanic?

We have mechanics available 7 days a week between 9am-7pm. You can get a mechanic as early as the same day. Depending on the parts availability, we are usually able to provide services with 24 hours notice, though the mechanics tend to get booked rather fast. You can see the mechanics' availability when you get a quote.

How late can I cancel an appointment?

To avoid a cancellation fee of $25, we request that you give us at least 24 hours of notice. You can cancel your appointment using your online account, mobile app, or by calling us at 1-800-701-6230.

What if the mechanic is late?

Please remember to allow 60 minutes for your mechanic to arrive. Sometimes mechanics may get caught in traffic or a previous job happens to take longer than expected. We do apologize if this is the case. If you have not heard from your mechanic by your appointment time, please give us a call at 800-701-6230 and we will help you with any issues. Should you need to reschedule, we will take care of this for you as well.

How do I know the parts are of good quality?

The parts team at YourMechanic has gone through a rigorous filtering process to select the brands that we think are good for your car. Our parts catalog has a list of approved brands for each type of car and each type of part. We take pride in having a network of mechanics that uses high quality parts. Whenever possible, the parts used are OE parts or aftermarket parts that meet or exceed OEM service specifications. In the estimate page, you will see the brands of the parts and all the parts are clearly marked as OE, OE equivalent or aftermarket parts.

Do you ever use Remanufactured or used parts?

We don’t engage in the business of supplying or installing used parts. Only in very rare cases do the mechanics in our network ever use remanufactured parts - usually in older cars when the parts manufacturers have discontinued the production of new parts. In those rare cases, in the estimate page, the parts will be clearly marked as “Remanufactured”.

Can you help me find parts from junkyards or auto-recyclers?

We apologize but we don’t engage in the business of sourcing parts from junkyards or auto-recyclers. In most cases, we prefer not to install parts that are used, or sourced from junkyards because of liability issues.

Where are the parts coming from?

We help mechanics acquire parts from several vendors - from local vendors to wholesale suppliers across the nation, allowing you to receive high quality parts at reasonable prices. Currently there are over 100 warehouses nationwide that ship parts directly to our mechanics. Whenever possible, we prefer OEM (original equipment manufacturer) or OE equivalent parts —we think they’re better for your car. We also offer high quality aftermarket parts, often from the same manufacturer as the original parts.

Can I provide my own parts?

Yes, you are welcome to buy your own parts and use one of our mechanics to install the parts. In the estimate page, open the “price breakdown” tab, and click on “parts options”. From there, you can choose to remove all the parts from your estimate. Please note: when you provide your own parts, our service warranty is voided.

How do I pay for the service?

We ask for a credit card when you schedule an appointment, however, we only process the payment after the work is complete. If you need to change the credit card number, you can give the mechanic a different card.

Where can I find my receipt?

We will email you a copy of the receipt and service report after mechanic has finished working on your car. You can also access your receipt at any time in your online account at YourMechanic.com.

How can I resolve my billing issues?

Are mechanics employees of YourMechanic?

YourMechanic is a network of certified independent mechanics. Mechanics are not employees of YourMechanic. Independent mechanics apply to join our network. Every mechanic goes through an extensive screening process that includes background and reference checks.

Your service agreement is with YourMechanic, not the individual mechanic. Although you are provided the service by the independent mechanics in our network, we stand behind the service with our warranty.

How are the mechanics screened?

Mechanics are screened through a two step process:

Step 1: We do a complete background check, reference check and one-on-one interview with the mechanic. About 5-10% of the mechanics who apply are approved.

Step 2: If the mechanic passes the screening process, we let them start accepting jobs from customers. Mechanics are rated by car owners after every job, and they have to a maintain a score of at least 80 (out of 100) to continue to be part of our network.

Are the mechanics certified?

Most of our mechanics are certified by ASE (National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence). Some of them are certified by similar organizations or they have OE/factory training. You can see mechanics’ certifications on their profile in the booking process. You can also see their experience, work history, jobs completed for other car owners, fees paid to the mechanic by other car owners, and their ratings and reviews. We take pride in being totally transparent.

How do I get a mechanic who specializes in my car (Honda, Ford, BMW etc.)?

Many of our mechanics have factory training with certain brands. A number of our mechanics work for dealers and offer services through YourMechanic on their time off. Some of them have years of experience working on certain types of cars (e.g. German cars, Domestic cars etc). You can see their particular strengths and expertise on their profiles as well as reviews from previous customers who own the same make of car as you do. Our system matches you only with the mechanic who is qualified to work on your car.

What is the warranty on labor and parts?

We stand behind the workmanship and parts provided by mechanics on our platform. Every service booked through YourMechanic comes with our 12 months or 12,000 miles of use, whichever comes first, measured from the date the services are provided and the odometer reading shown on the applicable invoice.
