Fuel Filter Replacement Service & Cost

What is the Fuel Filter all about?

The fuel filter cleans the fuel of particles and debris in the gas tank before it reaches the fuel pump. The gas tank can get rusted and retain moisture, causing the fuel to become contaminated. The fuel filter protects the engine from damage by making sure the fuel from the gas tank is clean. While the filter is not typically expensive, replacing it as recommended will prevent expensive auto repairs.

Keep in mind:

In some of the newer cars (made after 2005), the fuel filter is part of the fuel pump module and cannot be replaced. If the filter is clogged, it will eventually damage the fuel pump, which could be an expensive replacement. In diesel engine vehicles, this service is instead a fuel water separator replacement.

How it's done:

  • Remove and replace the fuel filter.
  • Inspect for any fluid leaks.
  • Test drive vehicle.

Our recommendation:

It’s a good idea to replace your fuel filter every 20,000 to 30,000 miles, or every two years, whichever comes first. You should also always have your filter inspected during routine maintenance intervals.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Fuel Filter?

  • Lack of power.
  • Car does not start.
  • Poor gas mileage.
  • Check engine light is on.

How important is this service?

Your fuel filter is responsible for making sure that the gas that enters your fuel pump is free of debris and contamination. Gas can easily become contaminated in the gas tank, which often contains dust, dirt, metal shavings, rust, and other forms of contamination. When this gas is sent from the tank to the fuel pump, it first passes through the fuel filter to be rid of the contamination. If your fuel filter is broken, it won’t filter the gas. When contaminated gas comes into contact with the engine, it can cause a lot of damage, which can result in severe and expensive repairs down the road.

Robert was amazing. Really communicative and efficient. He is also great to chat with on a personal level. He worked on my 1995 BMW m3 for a routine oil and spark plug change and demonstrated his advance knowledge working on European cars. You can tell he is very experienced. I definitely recommend him and look forward to working with him in the future.

He showed up on time but left right after for over an hour because he said he did not have all the tools he needed. After coming back, he did the job which is why he gets two stars. When I went out to finalize the transaction, he was smoking and decided it was okay to flick is cigarette on to the ground in front of my house. I should have checked under the hood to make sure everything was good before he left but I didn't. When I did, I noticed that he did not reconnect the MAF sensor (not a big deal) and that he broke a bracket off on my radiator fan. Now yourmechanic has been jerking me around for a week. Let this guy touch your car at your own risk. Also I would stay away from yourmechanic in general. They are nothing more than a craigslist mechanic.
