Hi! I changed my oil yesterday and must have used the wrong filter because my [engine](/topics-engine-toyota/) cut off and I had to pull over. Turns out the filter fell off and oil splashed all over the engine block. Got it towed, changed the oil again and used the correct filter but now the car won't start Mechanic's Assistant: Does the engine spark at all? Is there a trouble code or is your "check engine light" on? It tries to start but there's just this clicking noise. Check engine, battery, a/t oil temp and oil light are all on Mechanic's Assistant: What is the make/model/year of your car? 2007 toyota tacoma Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Tacoma yourself? What have you tried so far? I've tried changing the oil again and making sure everything is tight. Wiped down the [alternator](/topics-alternator-toyota/) as best I could is it safe to try a jump start? Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? No I think thats everything

Hello?
Automotive Expert
Yes I'm here What size engine do we have?

It's a 4.0L V6
Automotive Expert
It sounds like we may have locked up the motor. We need to put a breaker bar on the crankshaft pulley bolt and see if we can turn the motor over by hand.

Ok. That doesn't sound too hard. How much does something like that usually run for?
Automotive Expert
You mean for a breaker bar and a socket? Or to replace the motor?

Breaker bar
Automotive Expert
$20-$30 at harbor freight. Shouldn't be very expensive.

Cool. What if I were to get it done at a mechanic?
Automotive Expert
It would take 2-3 minutes to see if the crankshaft turns and no parts. I would do it for free if you asked me at my shop.

Oh awesome, that's great. I'll bring it into a shop tomorrow and see if that's what it is.

Automotive Expert
You're very welcome.

Would you mind explaining to me exactly what we're trying to accomplish here? I tried to explain it to a mechanic and he didn't know what I was talking about
Automotive Expert
We need to see if the engine is locked up. Ask if he can turn the engine over by hand.

Ok thanks
Automotive Expert
You're very welcome.

Hello, turns out the engine has seized unfortunately. What is my next step? Is it worth fixing or should I just scrap it? How much will this knock off the selling price?
Automotive Expert
It depends on if you'd like to keep it. You can put a used/reman motor in it for $3,000-$6000. It won't sell for much because the motor is blown, you'll have to find someone willing to replace the motor.

Ugh. How much can I expect to get it my truck is worth 12,600 kbb? Sorry I know that's a hard question to answer, just trying to figure out my optionshow does someone normally finance something like that?
Automotive Expert
You could expect $6,000-$8,000 but it would most likely be a cash deal so on the lower side. You'll have to find the right buyer because I don't believe they will finance for the repairs and the vehicle, it would just be a total lump sum which further complicates it. You're best bet is a mechanic who is willing to fix it for themselves.

Ok, what about a dealer?
Automotive Expert
They might give you a decent deal if you're willing to purchase a new vehicle. They would then auction it.

As in brand new? Or new to me?
Automotive Expert
Either one. Very subjective based upon how bad the dealer needs to sell you a new/used car.

Car misfires while idling
If you think your car is misfiring, you should have a Check Engine light up on the dash. If you have a Check Engine light, start by having the vehicle scanned for trouble codes (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/check-engine-light-is-on-inspection). If any cylinder is misfiring,...

My TCS light comes on frequently and then it will display TCS off and slipped. Sometimes it will cut off and then restart later.
Hi there. Most often, this problem is due to a dirty or failed wheel speed sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/wheel-speed-sensor-replacement). The ABS and TCS systems depend on wheel speed readings from these sensors. Cleaning the sensor heads, and the inductance rings on the...
There is a blow off valve type sound coming from the engine and then steam coming out.
Let me address your mention of the A/C first because of the possibility of a refrigerant leak. Such leaks do create "steam clouds" like that you are describing but the leaks end VERY quickly because the refrigerant boils off violently...
Auto stop not working and changed to engine idle on a Tahoe hybrid. Any thoughts on what could be causing the change?
