Q: To shift into drive gear, have to rev engine

asked by on September 23, 2016

In order to get my truck to shift into the Drive gear, I have to rev the engine. The Reverse does not have any trouble. The fluids are normal. Twice, I have had to replace the vacuum modulator and the new modulators are not like the old ones which had a pin in the back of them. What is your advice to get my truck working properly?

Hi there, thanks for writing in about your 1982 Ford F-100. The new modulators may be to blame if the parts are not exactly like the original one and made somewhat the same way. This can lead to improper performance. Have the shifting issue inspected firsthand and have the technician ensure there are no vacuum leaks which can cause these issues as well.

Car not starting, only clicks.
The first thing I would have checked by a certified mechanic would be the battery (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/battery-is-dead-inspection), a typical battery for your car only has a useful life of about 3-5 years. The amount of power left in the battery might...

Before throwing...

Car noise, dashboard warnings on
One guess is that the problem could be a faulty wheel bearing(s). Bad wheel bearings (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/wheel-bearings-replacement) often result in a rotational growling noise. The wheel bearing is integral to the hub assembly on your vehicle, which also houses the reluctor...

There is a leak around the thermostat housing which resulted in decreasing water in the radiator
Hi there. First thing we need to determine is from where on the housing is the coolant leaking. If it is coming from the thermostat location in the housing, it could simply be a thermostat gasket/O-ring leaking. If the leak...
