How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Car Title in Montana

After working so hard to pay for your vehicle, your car title is that piece of paper that proves you are the registered owner. What this title gives you is the ability to sell your car should you decide to, transfer ownership, and the ability to register it in another state. Because it is just a piece of paper, it’s not unheard of for it to be damaged, lost, or even stolen. In those cases it’s important to take the necessary steps in order to get a duplicate title.

If you live in the state of Montana, duplicate car titles are dealt with by the Title and Registration Bureau of the Montana Motor Vehicle Division (MVD). This this bureau you'll be able to obtain a duplicate title if you meet one of these reasons:

  • There has been a change in the ownership
  • You have had a name change
  • There are errors on the title
  • A change in your address
  • Damaged vehicle title, stolen vehicle title, or a lost vehicle title

You can opt to apply in person or by mail, whichever is more convenient for you. Here are the steps required.

In person

  • Head to your local Montana Title and Registration Bureau Office to pick up the Application for Duplicate Certificate of Title (Form MV7)

  • Fill out the Statement of Fact (Form MV100), should you require a replacement title due to a name change

  • Have the $12 fee

By mail

  • Follow all the same steps as above, and then mail your information to:

Title and Registration Bureau
Motor Vehicle Division
Montana Department of Justice
1003 Buckskin Dr
Deer Lodge, MT 59722

You can find more information about replacing a lost or stolen car title in Montana by visiting the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles site.
